Volunteers needed for Japan Disaster Recovery. The YMCA of Greater Seattle Is sending volunteers this fall and throughout the year to help in a variety of areas from preparing homes for reconstruction, serving meals at temporary housing facilities to leading “refresh” camps and activities. On September 24, Got Green’s Women in the Green Economy Project will release their survey findings and recommendations to the public at a community event at South Lake High School in Rainier Valley. The new green economy should mean that all communities have access to good paying green jobs, money to buy healthy foods, healthy homes that are energy efficient and free of toxins, and affordable public transportation. Survey findings conducted by Women in the Green Economy Project and volunteers earlier this year showed that SE Seattle low-income women of color regard good nutrition as the number one priority for their and their family’s health in a 2:1 margin, followed by green homes. When asked “what is your main barrier to a healthy diet for you and your family?” Seventy-eight percent had a simple answer: Cost.

            The “Green Women, Healthy Voices” Community Event Women in Green Economy Report release is scheduled on Saturday, September 24, from 12 – 2 p.m. at the South Lake High School, 8601 Rainier Ave S, Seattle. Child care provided and interpretation in Spanish, Somali, and Vietnamese.

On Saturday, October 8, the Ascend Seattle Chapter, a pan-Asian professional leadership organization, will hold its annual Ascend Diversity Convention at the Meydenbauer Center in Downtown Bellevue. This year’s theme is “Build Your Legacy”. The Diversity Career Expo will have prominent companies in the Northwest exhibiting and recruiting for culturally diverse candidates. Tet in Seattle Receives Mayor’s 2011

Arts Award

            The volunteer-based Vietnamese cultural group, Tet in Seattle was recently selected by the Seattle Mayor and Seattle Arts & Cultural Affairs for the 2011 Mayor’s Arts Award. Tet in Seattle coordinates the annual Vietnamese Lunar New Year celebration at Seattle Center. Executive director, Khanh Vu said of the honor, “It’s a very prestigious and special award, not just for Tet in Seattle, but the local Vietnamese and Asian community. It’s a strong validation of our growing presence in the greater Seattle area.”
