The International Examiner is the only nonprofit Asian American media organization of its kind in the country and the oldest and most respected Asian American publication in the Northwest. It is located in the heart of Seattle’s Chinatown-International District.

Digital Archives Project Manager
Reports to: Editor in Chief
Hours: Part-time, Contract
Pay rate: $4,400 stipend paid in two installments over a five-month period
Time Period: Five months, June–November 2013, or until completion of project
International Examiner (IE) is seeking a creative, detail-oriented and skilled project manager to oversee its Digital Archives Project. The Digital Archives Project Manager will be responsible for identifying, cataloguing and presenting to the public its 2000+ photographic images from the past 40 years of history in the International District (ID), as well as its accompanying narrative and oral history. The Manager will oversee the project from start to finish, working with participants (advisory committee members, volunteer historians, scanners/archivists, students, community partners, etc.) to collect interviews and photographs reflecting local API history from 1974 till now. The project will culminate in a final online gallery, presentation and interactive public event that showcases 40 years of ID history.
Major Responsibilities and Scope of Work:
- IDENTIFYING & GATHERING NEW MATERIAL – work with local historians and key community members to gather or research photographs, capture interviews and verify related historical information to curate into an appealing, relevant gallery presentation.
- CATALOGUING AND ARCHIVING MATERIAL ONLINE – work with IE web team to ensure historic web gallery is engaging, searchable, well structured and easy to navigate.
- TEAM/PROJECT MANAGEMENT & QUALITY CONTROL – convene and meet with community advisory committee on a monthly basis to determine and implement mission and objectives of project; develop team timeline, project goals and deadlines; work closely with community advisory committee, volunteers, researcher and archivist to ensure scanned photographs are optimized, filed and archived for quality online and print presentation; that historic archive background information is accurate and properly attributed; that communication is clear among all parties involved; that deadlines are met and project is presented in an engaging and timely manner.
- EVENT COORDINATION & MARKETING – coordinate logistics, live program and presentation of online gallery launch event for late summer or early fall; prepare items of deep historical value for a silent auction during launch event; prepare and disseminate marketing materials in promotion of the event, including event invitations (online and print), press releases and social media updates; coordinate day-of logistics and media; recruit and manage volunteers and staff as needed
- REPORTING & EVALUATION – submit interim and final reports on progress of project in meeting original objectives and hitting key milestones. Update and report regularly to Editor in Chief on progress and any challenges of the project.

Production Designer
Status: Contract, Freelance
Availability: Must be available twice a month on the first and third Mondays of the month for the entire day (morning – late night).
Compensation: DOE, flat monthly rate
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Proficiency with Adobe CS5 (Illustrator, Photoshop, inDesign)
- Microsoft Office Suite (Powerpoint, Excel, Word, Outlook)
- Desktop publishing experience (multi-page layouts); InDesign preferred
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Developing and producing layout of publication as needed and instructed
- Following template and style guide of print publication as needed
- Offering and implementing new layout design ideas to improve appeal of print product
- Preparing images and designs for online and print publication.
- Packaging and linking images in layout file for final publication.

Digital Media Internship
Summer 2013 (June–September)
Minimum hours: 12 hrs/week. Seeking graduate or college-level student, with credits or project work available.
The digital media intern will be responsible for managing all the social media accounts of the International Examiner (mainly Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube). They would serve as the online “voice” for the IE, and would need to be aware of Asian American history and/or possess community knowledge competency. The right candidate must be creative, self-motivated, and passionate about social media. The intern will research for relevant topics to generate conversations, engage in online communities and conversations, and actively develop creative ways and ideas to drive more traffic to the IE website, as well as maximize IE’s online content. This internship offers students a chance to create an overall digital media marketing strategy from concept to execution with the support of IE staff. Writing or other editorial opportunities will be available as needed. Specific and in-depth knowledge of new media trends a plus.

Special Events/Marketing Internship
Summer 2013
Preferred timeline: Mid-March – mid-June
Weekly Schedule: Flexible. Preferred: min. 12-15 hours/week
This position will be involved in the administrative coordination of marketing and/or fundraising events. Duties include but are not limited to: database maintenance, volunteer coordination, event logistics, marketing outreach, and general support. This opportunity is great for students or recent graduates looking to develop real-world skills and experience in marketing and event coordination or to build relationships within the nonprofit or business/corporate sector.
